Neuropsychological Assessment After Injury

Expert evaluation of cognitive impairment after brain injury—quantifying attention, memory and executive function by standardised testing, and linking the findings to causation, functional impact and prognosis. Our specialists provide CPR Part 35 compliant evidence, and urgent reports may be accommodated where feasible, subject to expert availability and court timetables.

When Needed

This assessment is required when a claimant reports cognitive difficulties after a head injury, hypoxic event or neurological illness, and the court needs those difficulties measured, attributed and costed rather than described.

What Is a Neuropsychological Assessment After Injury?

A neuropsychological assessment measures cognitive function after an injury using standardised tests, then interprets those scores against the person’s history, the medical records and the demands of daily life. It answers a question a scan cannot: what this person can and cannot now do, and how far that differs from their pre-injury baseline.

The assessment covers attention, processing speed, learning and memory, language, visuospatial ability and executive function, alongside mood, fatigue and pain, which affect test performance in their own right. Performance and symptom validity measures run throughout, because a court is entitled to know whether the scores can be relied upon.

  • Cognitive profile — standardised measurement of attention, memory, processing speed and executive function
  • Pre-injury baseline — estimation of prior ability from education, occupation, records and hold tests
  • Validity testing — performance and symptom validity measures reported openly, with their limits stated
  • Causation — whether the deficits are attributable to the index event, a pre-existing condition, or both
  • Functional impact — effect on independence, relationships, care needs, study and work capacity
  • Rehabilitation and prognosis — recommended interventions, their sequencing, and the likely course with and without them

Our experts provide CPR Part 35 compliant reports that translate test scores into clear, actionable evidence for judicial consideration, with ranges of opinion and limitations set out rather than buried.

“Neuropsychologist” is not a title protected in law. The statutory floor is HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist; the recognised specialist marker is the British Psychological Society Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists, entered through the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology. They are different things, and a letter of instruction should ask for both.

Key Assessment Components

Our assessment evaluates the following areas:

Clinical History

A comprehensive review of the medical, educational and employment records, the acute injury data and any pre-existing condition that bears on the pre-injury baseline.

Standardised Testing

The use of validated instruments such as the WAIS-IV, WMS-IV, D-KEFS or RBANS, scored against published norms to give a data-driven cognitive profile.

Validity Testing

Stand-alone and embedded performance and symptom validity measures, reported with the care the evidence requires: a failed measure speaks to test-taking approach, not to honesty.

Functional Impact

How the measured deficits show up in daily living, care needs and employability, corroborated by informant accounts and, where instructed, alongside occupational therapy evidence.

Causation Analysis

Attribution of the cognitive findings to the index event, addressing material contribution, acceleration and exacerbation, pre-existing vulnerability and any intervening events.

Recommendation Plan

Providing clear guidance on cognitive rehabilitation, support needs, workplace adjustments and the psychological interventions the individual requires.

Conditions That May Affect This Assessment

A range of neurological and psychological conditions can affect this assessment. These include:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Mild TBI and Post-Concussion Syndrome
Hypoxic and Anoxic Brain Injury
Stroke and Vascular Cognitive Impairment
Functional Cognitive Disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Chronic Pain

The presentation of these conditions is highly heterogeneous, meaning the impact on cognition, function and work capacity must be assessed on an individual basis.

Assessment Process

  1. Instruction Received

Legal professionals provide formal instructions and relevant case papers including medical, employment and educational records.

  2. Expert Matched

We assign a clinical neuropsychologist with specific expertise in the injury type, the age group and the court in which the evidence will be used.

  3. Assessment Conducted

A thorough clinical interview and psychometric testing are performed, often involving observations and informant histories.

  4. Report Delivered

A comprehensive, peer-reviewed report is delivered, detailing the clinical findings and their legal implications.
